I don’t have any close relatives who served in Vietnam, so I can only imagine the kinds of stories and experiences your dad has shared with you over the years. The history here is definitely a good reason to visit, especially when it’s so personal. I found out after I visited that the John McCain Memorial is right on Trúc Bạch Lake, which is really unfortunate that I missed it but a good reason for me to go back and revisit my favorite area in Hanoi. Keep an eye out for it when you visit!

Thanks for showing me what to expect and what I can do on my visit. The food looks intriguing and the historic spots a must. FYI, many of your pictures aren’t loading or are sideways.

I’d definitely enjoy eating my way around Hanoi. Glad to hear it’s budget friendly too. I hope you enjoy living in Ho Chi Minh! Such an exciting adventure.

Train street look like a street behind the raliway tracks of Mumbai in India. Trúc Bạch’s Island though not known much but looks worth going. I would love to see those temples.

I wonder how that tradition started in the first place. Roaming in the French Quarter would be a wonderful way to soak in old world charm too.

I think I had seen about the Train street on one of the program on TV , it’s really crazy!! The night view of that bridge looks really nice .Would love to visit the lake and the temple. Thanks for sharing.

The weather was like that the entire time I was there! I think blue skies are sort of rare in Hanoi. That’s one thing I like more about Ho Chi Minh City; blue skies and white puffy clouds are much more frequent 🙂

I love the lakes. Your picture of the red bridge reflecting on the night water in Hanoi is beautiful.

I have been there and your post just brought back my memories. The stalls next to the train track and the sound of the shopkeepers scrambling tools and tables on the arrival of train was an interesting thing to hear. Also the beautiful lakes and temples, and of course the food of Hanoi – I cannot forget.

We loved the contrasts between the Chinese/Vietnamese buildings and the French inspired architecture when we visited back in 2014. The food in Hanoi was good, but we preferred the specialties in Central and Southern Vietnam (more fresh veggies, more cold plates and a bit more spicy). The only thing we regret is that we didn’t have time to go to the train street. It looks like the weather was not very good when you were there, but don’t worry, it was also grey (and sticky) when we visited in October.
